Reuse last year's dog photo for this Christmas
A sharp July or last-December file is a valid 2025 source. When to reuse, when to reshoot, and how to date the card so you are not pretending the photo is new.

If last year's photo is sharp, front-lit, and still looks like this dog, reuse it. Run a 2025 Christmas look at Medium. Date the card. Reshoot only if the face, weight, or coat has changed in a way you want on paper.
The date on the source is not the date on the look
Halloween Paws AI does not require a photo from this week. A July backyard sit with open eyes is a better source than a December 23 smear. Last Christmas's unedited couch photo is a better source than this year's tree-at-night experiment. The look — Santa's Workshop, Winter Wonderland, or Cozy Fireplace — supplies 2025. You supply a face. If the dog has since gone grey, gained a scar, or lost an eye, you may want a new file because the card is a record. If the dog looks the same, reuse is honest. Honesty is dating the card and not writing just taken if it was not.
When reuse is the kind choice
Seniors on a pain day, new rescues who are not ready, puppies who will not sit, multi-dog households out of time, and anyone who already spent last weekend fighting a sweater: reuse. Open the old file, crop tighter if you were too wide, run Medium. One credit. You can still take new snapshots for the camera roll. Those snapshots do not have to be the mailer. If last year's file already has a heavy filter, do not reuse it. Find the original. If you only have a screenshot of a screenshot, reshoot. The model will keep compression artifacts you pretend are fur.
When you should take a new photo anyway
Puppy growth. A summer cut versus a winter coat on a doodle. A new white muzzle you want people to see. A dog who was unwell last year and looks like themselves again. A previous file with another pet's ear in it. A previous file that is only a sitting rump. Those need a new source. The session can still be two minutes on a towel. You are not obligated to invent a new personality. You are obligated to upload a face that matches the dog who will be living in the house when the card is opened. There is no extra Christmas look for 'updated dog.' There are three looks and a camera.
A July beagle that became a December hearth
You have a July 12 photo, green couch, window on the right, tongue in. You run Cozy Fireplace at Medium on November 20. You print From our couch to yours, 2025 on the back. You do not write we shot this by the fire. You did not. The file is still a true picture of this beagle. Relatives who saw the July post may notice the couch. Fine. The hearth is the look. Halloween Paws AI processed the July photo and did not store it. You still have July in Photos. You can run Winter Wonderland on it in 2026 if you want. Same source, new credit, new year.
Reusing a file that was already an AI portrait
Do not upload last year's Santa's Workshop result as this year's source. You will stack sets — a workshop inside a fireplace — and the face will drift. Go back to the original camera photo. If you cannot find it, take a new one. This matters for households who used the app when it listed as Santa Paws or Christmas Paws. The original snap is the asset. The old portrait is a finished print, not a new upload. Subtle, Medium, and Dramatic still apply to a fresh run. They do not mean 'more Christmas on top of last year's Christmas.' One set at a time.
Do this in order
- Find the original camera photo, not a screenshot of last year's portrait.
- Confirm the face is sharp and still looks like this dog.
- Run one 2025 look at Medium.
- Date the card. Do not write just taken unless you just took it.
Tips that actually change the file
- July sharpness beats December darkness.
- Reshoot if weight, grey, coat, or health changed in a way you want on the card.
- Never re-upload last year's finished workshop as this year's source.
- Crop tighter on an old wide backyard photo before you spend the credit.
- Keep the original snap in an album named source so next December is easy.
Mistakes that waste a credit
- Uploading a screenshot of a screenshot of last year's card.
- Writing just taken on a July file.
- Stacking a new look on top of an old AI portrait.

Is it dishonest to use a photo from July?
Not if the face is still this dog and you do not claim you just shot it by a fire. The Christmas look is allowed to be new.
I only have last year's Santa Paws result. Can I reuse that?
As a print, yes. As a new upload, no. Find the original camera photo or take a new one.
Will the app keep my old photo this time?
No. Photos are processed and not stored on Halloween Paws servers, same as last year.
